what is the difference between an architect and architectural designer in New Zealand?

In New Zealand, the terms “architect” and “architectural designer” refer to different professions with distinct qualifications and roles in the building and design industry. In Australia the term “building designer” is used (rather then architectural designer.) The title “architect” is protected by law under the Architect Act in each state and territory of Australia. To use this title, individuals must meet specific educational and practical experience requirements and be registered with the relevant state or territory architectural registration board. This distinction doesn’t seem quite as clear within New Zealand with both professions using the word architect or a derivative of it.

architect:

qualifications

Architects must complete a professional degree in architecture, typically a Master of Architecture, followed by a period of practical experience. They must also register with the Architectural Council of New Zealand and hold a practicing certificate.

role

Architects are trained to design buildings and spaces that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable. They have an understanding of structures, building codes, and laws. Their work often involves overseeing the entire design process, from concept to completion, including managing teams and coordinating with other professionals.

code of conduct

Rules set forth by the New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB). The purpose of the code is to ensure that architects uphold professional standards and ethical practice

architectural designer (building designer in Australia):

qualifications

Architectural designers may have a degree in architectural design or a diploma in architectural technology. However, they are not required to be registered or licensed in the same way that architects are.

role

Architectural designers focus on residential and smaller commercial projects. They can create building designs, plans, and specifications and may work alongside architects and builders. While they often have experience in design, they might not have the same level of training in complex structures or regulations as architects.

main difference between an architect and architectural designer

The main difference between an architect and architectural designer lies in the level of formal education, qualifications, and regulatory requirements, with architects being more extensively trained and recognized in the profession than architectural designers. This results in a different level of service.

But why select an architect over an architectural designer – see link here.
